Greetings

Welcome to the March newsletter from Physical Therapy Advantage.

Our PTA family is growing and we would like to introduce you to the new additions to our staff and family.

Our new staff additions:

Amy Schneider, physical therapist, graduated from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor with a Bachelor of Music, summa cum laude (2000). She went on to pursue a graduate degree from the University of Indianapolis in physical therapy, with clinical rotations at regional clinics in greater Indianapolis and at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. She was awarded a Doctor of Physical Therapy, summa cum laude in 2006.
Amy has experience working in a variety of settings, including outpatient orthopedics, inpatient rehabilitation, workman's compensation, pre-work screening and work conditioning.  She has experience treating patients with surgical and non-surgical conditions from the neck to the foot. She has pursued various continuing education courses including all Kinesiology Taping certification courses and courses in functional manual therapy with the Institute of Physical Art. She will be pursuing her ASTYM certification this spring.  In her off time, she enjoys reading, exercising, playing music and spending time with her family and friends.

Sean Suits, physical therapy aide, is a recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville where he majored in Health and Human Performance.  Sean entered this field because he has always known two things about himself; he loves working out and loves helping people. He would eventually like to go back to school and either become a physical or occupational therapist.  In his free time he spends as much time outdoors as possible, whether it be hiking, canoeing, or enjoying nature.

Dealing With Neck Pain

Have you been experiencing frequent neck pain or stiffness?

Many adults are currently struggling with this issue. Recurring pain that is not properly addressed can dramatically decrease your quality of life so it should not be ignored.

There are a number of different reasons why neck pain occurs, but the mostly common causes are sports and other accidental injuries such as car accidents or the gradual effect of poor daily postures we adopt in our work and home lives.

Dance & Gymnastics

Dance and gymnastics continue to gain in popularity, whether for competition or pleasure.

Both children and adults of all ages are getting involved in these dynamic and fun physical activities.

However, both of these activities move the body through more range of motion than in our regular day, and can involve very precise body movements and more balancing skills than some people realize.

In order to safely engage in dance or gymnastics with style, balance, and grace it is important to become properly conditioned physically and to know how to prevent unnecessary ankle, wrist, knee, or foot injuries.

Understanding Tendonitis

Tendonitis refers to acute inflammation of a tendon or the tendon sheath.

Tendinosis refers to excessive wear and tear to a tendon without inflammation present.

Recurring tendon problems are quite common, especially in individuals who play high impact sports.

In particular, running injuries account for about 30 percent of all tendon issues, while another 40 percent is caused by repetitive tennis-type (racquet or club) injuries.
