Weekly Cup of Joe - Episode #41 – Reading (Professional & Personal Growth)

Good morning and welcome to your Weekly Cup of Joe. My name is Joe King. I'm the owner of Physical Therapy Advantage in North Aurora Coming today with our weekly vlog series of Your Weekly Cup of Joe. This week, I wanted to talk to you about reading, just an activity that I do. My mom would've had me read more. When I was a kid, he was a public librarian back in the hometown where I grew up in. Didn't read a ton back then; I liked it, but I didn't read a ton. It wasn't until I got to graduate school and then afterwards that I really started to read a lot more and found that it's been one of the best things for me as far as to clear my head at the end of the night, just to gain knowledge, soak up things. And more importantly, over the last 14 years for me, a business owner, i.e. read a lot of self-help books, business books; that sort of thing, to really try to help improve me as a business owner and just be a better person in general. So, typically, as I said, I'll read a lot of different things. Right now I've got three things I rotate through. I always have a leisure book, I'll read, and then, as I said, I'll do a lot of self-help books. Right now, reading The Atomic Habits by James Clear —a really good book, it's been nice. 

And then I'll look at my professional journals as well. So I rotate through those maybe a week at a time and put one down and then read something else for week. It all depends on how interesting it is. Sometimes I have to get through the leisure books---the fictional books that I like to read, sometimes I can't put those down so much, so I get through them a little quicker, but it really doesn't matter what you read; newspaper, anything. I'm traditional, so I like my paper copies, that sort of thing, but reading via Kindle, has done it. It's okay too, don't mind it. It's the same kind of good stuff. Also, audiobooks are good, especially if your long commute, whatever works for you, but just something you can gain to soak up some knowledge or decompress or whatever it may be. It's all good for you, and it's a great example for your kids and your grandkids to get them to read more as well.

So hope you'll take this tip and pointer to heart. And if you are a reader to keep on reading, and if you are not, hopefully, you'll start the habit and maybe you can set a goal of reading, maybe one book every other month or one book a month or something like that. It's pretty bold, but definitely think you can do it. Take, 10 to 15 minutes a day to read, it's not that much. And I think if you'll try it, you'll really find true enjoyment in it.
